Andaz Miami Beach: A Stylish Throwback with Modern Magic

Content Index

From the sparkling Atlantic waves, it’s hard to imagine that the now-trendy Andaz Miami Beach was once one of the tallest buildings in the area. Originally built in 1940 as the Lord Tarleton Hotel, this 16-story art deco gem has transformed over the decades—but it’s never lost its charm. In May 2025, it reopened as the first Andaz hotel in Florida, blending nostalgic elegance with modern luxury, and I was lucky enough to be the first journalist to experience it.

A Warm Miami Welcome

As I arrived under the retro covered driveway on Collins Avenue, I was immediately greeted like a VIP. A porter whisked away my bag while I was guided to the open-air check-in lounge—think fire pit, ocean breeze, palm trees, and a hibiscus lemonade in hand. Local Cuban music drifted through the air, setting the mood. I’ve stayed at several hotels in Miami Beach, but none felt as rooted in local culture and design as this one.

The Oceanfront Rooms

My Oceanfront Balcony Deluxe Suite on the 11th floor offered views straight out of a postcard—two heated pools shaded by sea-blue umbrellas, and beyond them, the white sands of Mid Beach dotted with creamsicle-colored cabanas.

The suite itself? Spacious, sunlit, and thoughtfully designed with a marble bathroom, seashell-inspired decor, and a cozy lounge area perfect for working (or relaxing). Even the smallest rooms here feel large, thanks to the building’s curved, wave-like architecture, which replaces sharp corners with soft, organic shapes.

You can choose between city skyline or ocean views, and enjoy floor-to-ceiling windows that let in plenty of natural light. Top pick? The Panoramic Oceanfront Penthouse—a two-bedroom suite with 926 square feet of luxury.

A Foodie’s Paradise

If you’re into good food (and who isn’t?), José Andrés Group leads the culinary experience here with three incredible spots:

  • Aguasal: A Mediterranean-Miami fusion restaurant with dishes like za’atar hummus, dorade in pepper ezme, and a standout saffron rice pudding.
  • Bar Centro: Casual by day, lively by night. The snack menu is full of surprises think caviar cones, grilled cheese sandwiches, and José Andrés’ signature liquid olives.
  • The Bazaar (coming soon): A Spanish-style tapas haven in a sultry setting—something to look forward to.

By the pool? Fried shrimp tacos, smash burgers, fresh fruit, and a watermelon margarita with Tajín made for the perfect mid-afternoon snack.

Pools, Popsicles & Pops of Fun

The hotel has two heated pools: an upper level surrounded by palms and umbrellas, and a lower level with cabanas and daybeds. My favorite part? The “popsicle pager” at my cabana press a button and a tray of cherry popsicles arrives. Now that’s what I call luxury.
